The Pakistan Muslim League (PML) was a political party in Pakistan founded in 1949 by the All India Muslim League, the party that had successfully led the campaign for the creation of Pakistan in 1947. The PML was the dominant political party in Pakistan for much of its history, and has held a majority in the National Assembly, the lower house of Pakistan's parliament, for much of the time since independence. The first general election in Pakistan took place in 1970, following the end of military rule by President Ayub Khan. The PML, under the leadership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, won a narrow majority in the National Assembly and Bhutto became the country's first democratically elected prime minister. The second general election in Pakistan took place in 1977, after Bhutto was overthrown in a military coup led by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. The PML, now led by Nawaz Sharif, emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly, but fell short of a majority. Sharif was able to form a coalition government with the help of smaller parties, and he became prime minister.
Some notable members of the PML-N include:
Nawaz Sharif: Founder and former leader of the PML-N
Shahbaz Sharif: President of the PML-N and former Chief Minister of Punjab
Maryam Nawaz: Daughter of Nawaz Sharif and a prominent member of the party
Ahsan Iqbal: Former federal minister and a central leader of the party
Khawaja Muhammad Asif: Former foreign minister and a senior leader of the party
These are just a few examples, and there are many other members of the PML-N at the local, provincial, and national levels.
