75 years of Politics

Pakistan came into being in 1947 after the hard work of Muslims of the subcontinent on all platforms whether political, financial, or even they had given their lives for a dream place where they can live in peace, where they can develop themselves or they can practice Islam without any fear and disruption. Soon after independence Pakistan got caught in crises that never really allowed Pakistanis to achieve their dreamland. Pakistan’s Prime Ministers were assassinated, martial laws were imposed, and east Pakistan got separated from Bangladesh.

Today we are going to learn about some incidents soon after independence due to which Pakistan did not get an ideal start.

Pakistan’s first head of state was Quaid-I-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. He was the first governor-general of Pakistan. Liaquat Ali khan nominated Him to Mountbatten on 4th July 1947 to recommend Jinnah as the First governor general of Pakistan under monarch king George. This appointment haunts Pakistan today even after 75 years because the governor-general is not selected by the people so giving him power is an injustice to the vote of the people. Quaid-I-Azam should have opted to be the first prime minister of Pakistan, a designation elected by the people and deserve to be given powers. He was a wise ruler but later on, the powers of the governor-general were misused and caused a lack of political stability in Pakistan. This lack of stability has allowed the military to step in and take charge and from that time till today we observe military interference in civil matters in Pakistan.

Pakistan changed seven prime ministers till 1958 and these all changes were either killing or misuse of powers. This misuse still exists because we have not developed a system to give power to executives elected by the people through the constitution.

Ø In October 1951 after the assassination of Liaquat Ali Khan, Khawaja Nazimuddin who was one of the founders of Pakistan was appointed as Prime Minister but in April 1953 due to powers Governor General Ghulam Muhammad dismissed him even though Nazimuddin had the support of Constituent Assembly

Ø In 1955 Pakistan’s third Prime Minister Muhammad Ali Bogra was forced to give reign by acting Governor-General Sikander Mirza.

Ø After Muhammad Ali Bogra Choudhary Muhammad Ali become Prime Minister but due to conflicts with Muslim League he resigned

Ø Mr. Hussain Shaheed Suharwardi 5th and Mr. Ibrahim Ismail Chaundrigar 6th Prime Ministers of Pakistan resigned under the pressure of Pressure Iskander Mirza

Ø Malik Feroz Noon Khan was the seventh prime Minister of Pakistan who was removed due to martial law imposed by Iskander Mirza.

From these incidents, we can conclude that the decision not to give power to the right man is one of the important hurdles in the way of Pakistan’s progress.

Another misery with Pakistan from the beginning is a series of serious incidents happening again and again with no inquiry and change of pattern. Pakistan’s first two heads of state Quaid-I-Azam and Liaquat Ali khan's death were unusual and a mystery even today after 75 years this pattern did not stop and later on heads of state were put to death with no public reports and inquiries of incidents. Quaid-I-Azam Muhammad Jinnah was ill in his last days, and He was staying at Ziarat which was a healthy place. When his condition got serious, he traveled to Karachi. He was hardly received by few at Mauripur airport and from there he traveled by ambulance. According to his sister Fatima Jinnah, after a few minutes, ambulances coughed and stopped and we were told that they ran short of petrol. There was not any vehicle or ambulance to put Quaid's stretcher, so they had to wait for hours and got seriously ill due to that and died the following night As a nation do we inquire why he was not received well at the airport? Why did his ambulance run out of petrol? Why there were no alternative ambulances or vehicles? We should inquire and find answers. Liaquat Ali Muhammad was not only the first Prime Minister of Pakistan but also one of the founding members of Pakistan. Despite his contribution, he was assassinated in Rawalpindi on October 16, 1951. Akbar khan his killer was shot by a police officer on spot and from that day till today we do not know who was behind the assassination. The day Pakistan wants to progress we have to inquire into these incidents and find answers to the questions that our system does not allow us to ask.
